“Slides With Mike Schafer” photo CD series

In 1964, I saw my first railroad slide show, presented by Jim Boyd, destined to become a lifelong close friend and mentor. We were all blown away that evening by Jim's bold, dynamic, and colorful images projected onto the screen, coupled to his colorful narration. That night, a custom began for us rag-tag group of railfans in northern Illinois. "Let's do slides!" became the battle cry, as we got together almost every week to visually share our latest railroading expeditions. Fifty years later, even as the medium transforms from slides to digital images, the tradition continues. And I love giving slide shows, too. Now, I'm frequently asked to give slide shows all over the U.S. Unfortunately, I'm not always able to oblige, but my photo CD series is the next best thing. Yeah, I'll miss getting together with all of you in person, but there'll be more Coke and pizza to go around! — Mike

Model Railroad

Illinois & St. Louis Railroad custom-painted 40-foot refrigerator car kit, HO scale. Limited run!

Mike Schafer’s, 1,600-square-foot HO scale model railroad, the Illinois & St. Louis, has been featured in Kalmbach’s Model Railroader magazine and Model Railroad Planning 2005 and more recently in Railroad Model Craftsman, which was acquired by White River Productions in 2014. (Mike is also a columnist for RMC and his I&StL sometimes makes cameo appearances in the magazine.) Periodically, Mike offers special, limited runs of I&StL freight cars, custom-lettered and pad-painted by Track One of Harvard, Illinois. The most popular cars to date were two-bay Athearn hoppers in oxide red and in black, which quickly sold out a few years ago. This was followed by the blue plug-door DF (Damage Free) I&StL boxcar — a Roundhouse kit — designed and custom-painted by Track One. This is now also sold out. Our most popular car to date is the Mid-Continent Refrigerated Express reefer, a fictional consortium of fictional Midwestern railroads operating a network of reefers for perishable traffic. the car carres the report marks of MCRX and the I&StL’s famed winged herald. The first run sold out and we now have new stock available, numbered or unumbered. These kits are produced by Accurail, not too far down the road from us. The new two-bay Athearn kits, designed and pad-painted by Track One, supplement the first run of I&StL hoppers though with slightly different markings.
